Welcome & the grand tour

Where everything lives, and the whole job in three steps.

A whole website — home page, the pages behind it, photos, contact details — built by clicking on things.

The menu

  • Back to Pancho — the arrow at the top. It takes you to your Dashboard.
  • Home — your pages, and New website.
  • Templates — the ready-made designs.
  • My websites — every site you have made. Click one to open it.
  • Domains — your own web address. It opens beside your site.
  • Examples — sites made with Sitejac.
  • Tutorials — this course.
  • What's new, Account, Support and Legal.

The same menu runs down the left inside the editor, so you never have to come out to reach it. Paying for your plan is on your Pancho account, not in here.

The whole job

  1. Pick a design.
  2. Click anything on it and change it, and add whatever extra pages you need.
  3. Press Publish. It saves the page first.

The editor in one look

Publish, Preview and Save Page sit along the top. The panel on the left switches between Pages, Templates, Elements and Stock.

Worth knowing: Save Page saves the page you are looking at, not the whole site. On a site with several pages, press it on each one as you finish it.

Lesson 02 · 2 min read

Pick a design

Search the gallery, look at one properly, and open it on the canvas.

Every site starts from a finished-looking design — restaurants, salons, trades, agencies, studios. You replace the words and photos.

Take one

  1. Press New website, in the menu or on Home. The editor opens on the Templates tab.
  2. Type in Search templates… to narrow the list, or press one of the category buttons under it — Creative, Business, Portfolio and the rest.
  3. Click a design to open it in full. You get its rating, its Included pages, its Palette, and a Preview link that opens the real thing in a new tab.
  4. Press Use this design, then confirm with Use this design again.

Judge the bones, not the words

The example text and photos are all going. Look at the order of the sections instead — where the big message sits, whether there is room for a gallery, whether the contact part is where you want it.

Or start with nothing

Press Start from blank beside the search box, then drag sections in from the Elements tab.

Keep the ones you like

The heart on a design saves it to Favorites, which then sits at the top of the list.

Worth knowing: a design arrives as a home page with all its sections on it. Extra pages — About, Services, Contact — you add yourself, and the next lesson shows how. Taking a design also wipes whatever is on the canvas, so choose it before you start writing.

Edit anything by clicking

Words, photos and whole sections, then save the page.

If you can see it on the canvas, you can click it and change it.

Words

Click any text and type. Headlines, paragraphs, button labels — the same move for all of them. Click outside the text when you are done.

Photos, from the free library

Click the photo you want to replace. Open the Stock tab and click any picture — it drops into that exact slot, cropped to fit. Search with the box at the top, and use the two small buttons beside it to switch between photos and videos.

Photos, your own

Click the photo, then open the Properties tab. Under Image, press Set image. In the Media window press Browse Files, pick your file, then press Add Selected.

Sections

Hover over a block of the page and a small toolbar appears on it — arrows to Move element up and Move element down, and a bin to Remove section. To add more, open the Elements tab and drag one onto the canvas.

More pages

  1. Open the Pages tab on the left.
  2. Press the + button in its header.
  3. Type a Page Name and press Create Page.

Click any page in that list to edit it on the canvas. To point a menu item at it, click the menu link, open Properties, and put the new page's file name in Url.

Check all three screens

The buttons at the top right are Mobile view, Tablet view and Desktop view. Look at Mobile view before you publish.

Save

Press Save Page. Undo and Redo are in the toolbar if you go wrong.

Worth knowing: Publish puts the last saved version of every page online. Save the page you are on before you switch to another one, or the work you did on it is not in what goes live.

Lesson 04 · 2 min read

Put your site online

Publish, get your web address, and change it any time.

Publishing copies your site onto the internet and gives it its own web address.

Go live

  1. Press Publish. It saves the page first, then publishes.
  2. Site published appears. Press Open in new tab to walk through it, or Continue editing to carry on.

Click through every menu item on the live site once. A link pointing at a page you renamed is the usual thing to find.

Share the address

Your site moves into the Live group in My websites, with its address under the name. Press ⋯ on the row and choose Copy its link.

Your own web address

The card that appears after publishing offers Set up a domain if you would rather use a name like yourbrand.com. Domains opens beside your site: buy a name, or use one you already own.

Changing it later

Edit the page and press Publish again. Visitors see the new version straight away and the address stays the same.

Taking it down

Press ⋯ on the row and choose Take offline. Your work stays in My websites as a draft.

Worth knowing: publishing comes with All Access. Until it is paid, Publish reads Upgrade to publish. Take offline stops the link working immediately — anything you have already handed out stops opening.

Publishing and your plan

All Access, where you pay for it, and your account.

You can build and save your site before you pay. Putting it online comes with All Access, the one plan for every app.

Getting All Access

  1. Press Upgrade to publish, at the top of the editor.
  2. Press Upgrade to publish again on the card that opens. Pricing opens on your Pancho account.
  3. Pick Monthly or Yearly, add a code if you have one, and press Subscribe.
  4. Come back to Sitejac and press Publish.

All Access opens every other app too, with the same account.

Your plan, cards and receipts

They live on your Pancho account, under Money: Billing has your plan and card, Wallet your balance, Invoices any bill we send. Back to Pancho, at the top of the menu, takes you there.

Your account

Account, in Sitejac's menu, is where you change your name, email and password. Each row has a Change button.

Worth knowing: Cancel plan on Billing ends your plan at the end of the period you have paid for. Your site stays online until that date.

Getting help

Ask inside the app, and the reply comes back in the same conversation.

Ask a question

  1. Open Support.
  2. Press New message.
  3. Write what you need in your own words, and press send.

A real person reads it. The reply comes back in the same conversation, and in your email too. Type under it to carry on.

Later questions

Press New message again for something new. Your old conversations stay in the list, so you can look up an answer you were given before.

What to put in the message

  • What you were trying to do — "I wanted the gallery on the About page."
  • What happened instead — "it dropped in at the bottom."
  • Which site and which page, if you have more than one.

Support from anywhere

Support is in the menu inside the editor, so you do not have to leave what you were doing.

Worth knowing: a conversation marked Resolved is closed. Start a new one with New message.

A free business email

Your own address on your domain, free with Zoho Mail.

An email address on your own domain, like hello@yourbusiness.com, for free with Zoho Mail.

What the free plan gives you

  • Up to five addresses on one domain.
  • 5 GB for each address.
  • Zoho's web mail and the Zoho Mail app on your phone.

The free plan can't be added to other email apps, like Outlook or Apple Mail, and it can't send your website's form emails. Zoho's Mail Lite plan adds both.

You need a domain first. Buy one under Domains in Sitejac's menu, or use one you already own.

1. Sign up with Zoho

  1. Go to zoho.com/mail and open Pricing.
  2. Scroll down to the Forever Free Plan and press Sign up.
  3. Choose to sign up with a domain you already own, and type it in.
  4. Fill in your name, a phone number for the code Zoho texts you, and a password.

2. Prove the domain is yours

Zoho shows a TXT record. Add it on Pancho:

  1. Open Domains and press your domain.
  2. Under DNS records, press Add.
  3. Type TXT, Host @, and paste the value from Zoho. Press Save record.
  4. Back in Zoho, press Verify.

3. Make your address

Create your first address, for example hello@yourbusiness.com. You can add up to four more for your team.

4. Send your mail to Zoho

Zoho shows three MX records. Add each one under DNS records with Add:

| Type | Host | Value | Priority | |---|---|---|---| | MX | @ | mx.zoho.com | 10 | | MX | @ | mx2.zoho.com | 20 | | MX | @ | mx3.zoho.com | 50 |

Then add the two records that stop your mail landing in spam, also from Zoho's setup screen:

  • TXT, Host @, value v=spf1 include:zohomail.com ~all
  • TXT, the Host Zoho gives you (it starts with zmail._domainkey), and the long value Zoho shows

Copy Zoho's own values exactly. If you signed up in Europe or India, the names end in .eu or .in instead of .com.

5. Start using it

Open mail.zoho.com, or the Zoho Mail app on your phone, and sign in with your new address. Mail can take from a few minutes to a few hours to start arriving after the records are added.

Worth knowing: if your domain was bought somewhere else, add the same records where you bought it. Already using another email on this domain? Moving its MX records to Zoho moves your mail too.

Send your forms to your email

Every message people send through your site, in your inbox.

Every form on your site can email you what people send: a booking, a question, a quote request.

Turn it on

  1. Click the form on your page. Its settings open on the left.
  2. Scroll to Receive submissions and turn on Email (SMTP).
  3. In Send submissions to, type the address that should get them, for example your Zoho address.

The account that sends them

Your form's emails are sent through an email account of yours. You set it up once, and every form on every site you publish uses it.

  1. Press Email account setup.
  2. Press your provider: Gmail, Outlook / Hotmail, Yahoo or Zoho. The server details fill in.
  3. Fill in Username with the full address, and App password.
  4. Fill in From name (your business) and From address (the same address).
  5. Press Save email account, then Send test.

An app password is a separate password your provider makes for other apps. It is not your normal password. The guides under the form, like Gmail — how to get an app password, show where to make one.

Which account to send with

  • A free Gmail works well. Turn on 2-Step Verification in your Google account, then make an app password.
  • A free Zoho inbox can receive these emails but can't send them. Sending through Zoho needs its Mail Lite plan or higher.

Go live

Press Publish. From then on, every new message lands in your inbox as a tidy card with every answer under its label. Press Reply to answer the person who sent it.

Worth knowing: a free Gmail sends about 500 emails a day. For a busy form, the Other providers guide lists sending services made for websites.
